Egypt. 5 Pounds, 1974. KM-444. Weight 0.7314 ounce. Mintage 1,000 pieces. 1973 October War.
Issued in commemoration of the October 1973 War, Krause-444. A very rare coin with a high Krause value.
The 1973 Arab-Israeli war began with surprise attacks by Egyptian and Syrian forces on Israeli positions on the Golan heights and the Sinai peninsula, which had been captured by Israel in the 1967 Six-Day War. The initial attacks were largely successful but eventually the Arab forces were driven back. However Egypt did eventually win back the Sinai and was able to reopen the Suez Canal. The obverse of this coin shows an Egyptian soldier in the process of successfully crossing the Suez canal into the Sinai while holding a wreath of peace that spans both banks.
