1/2 Dollar    (sold for $1500.0)

1883 Hawaiian Half Dollar. NGC graded MS-62. Attractive prooflike surfaces and lightly toned. The quarter dollar issued by the Hawaiian Kingdom in 1883 is considered the most available denomination. Half Dollars, on the other hand, are quite scarce in Mint grades, although many circulated and are readily acquired in worn condition. This handsome devil has nicely struck designs and, as stated, reflective surfaces. The central shield from the Hawaiian Royal Coat of Arms occupies the reverse side of the half dollar. Though dated 1883, the coins first entered circulation late in 1884 and were popular with the population. Since Hawaiian coins were struck to the same standard as their U.S. coin counterparts, they circulated right alongside the contemporary U.S. silver and gold. Hawaii never issued gold coins. The later post-Monarchy government, however, did issue both Gold and Silver paper money certificates backed by U.S. gold and silver coins in the period from 1895 to 1899 (PCGS # 10991) . Estimated Value $1,500 - 1,600. Categories: Hawaii Coins and Tokens
