(sold for $16500.0)

Antoninus Pius, AD 138-161. Gold Aureus (7.26 g) minted at Rome, AD 150-151. Laureate head right of Antoninus Pius. Reverse: Pax standing left, holding branch and scepter. RIC 200(c); Calicó 1590. Mint-caused "push of thumb" at 6 o'clock; edge is perfect, not wavy. Both sides needle-sharp with a beautiful high-relief portrait. Nearly Mint State. With such a lengthy obverse inscription, the mint worker could only scrawl a pseudo "PP" at the conclusion of the legend. Estimated Value $12,000 - 15,000. Ex NAC 41 (2007); ex Triton IV (2000), lot 556. Categories: Roman Imperial Coinage
