C. Coelius Caldus, moneyer. AR Denarius minted at Rome, 51 BC. Bare head right of C. Coelius Caldus (consul 94 BC); to left, voting tablet inscribed L D. Reverse: Radiate head right of Sol; below chin, circular shield; to left, S above oval shield. Sear 403; Coelia 5; Cr. 437/1b; Syd. 892. Choice Very Fine and rare. The obverse portrait on the moneyer's coins depicts his grandfather, the first of his family to achieve the consulship; the standards refer to his successes in Nearer Spain and Gaul. The head of Sol on this reverse type, along with the Macedonian shield, may allude to an otherwise unattested victory in the East. Estimated Value $600 - 800. The Pat Coyle Collection.
