1542,
MEXICO. Carlos & Johanna, Early Series. 4 Maravedis, ND (1542). Assayer G, Juan Gutierrez.
ND (1542) (Struck During the Tenure of Assayer G, Juan Gutierrez).KM-2; Nesmith-Plate-XII#1; Cal-unlisted type. This is a wonderful example of the first copper coin of Mexico. Although RARE as a type, it is VERY RARE in this state of preservation. Normally found well-worn and heavily corroded. This piece is a lovely chocolate brown color, showing only minor surface porosity and much better metal quality than normal. The details grade refers to light surface porosity, which is normal for this issue. A rare type that was only produced for a short period in 1542, just prior to the transition to late series coinage.
Pedigree: From the David O'Harrow Collection.
