1763,
RUSSIA. 5 Ruble, 1763/2-CNB. Catherine II (the Great) (1762-96). PCGS AU-58.
EXTREMELY RARE Heavy Weight Standard Gold 5 Ruble of Catherine the Great
Fr-130; C-78.2; Bit-7; Dia-2; Sev-259. This heavy weight standard type of Catherine was issued in 1762 and 1763 only, on a weight standard of 8.27 gms. In 1764, the weight standard was lowered to 6.54 gms, and as a result these heavier weight 5 Rubles disappeared from circulation. The piece offered shows a mintage of 7,515 pieces being struck, which is by far the smaller mintage of the two dates. However, it is likely that much of this was melted down once the lighter weight standard 5 Rubles began to circulate. An EXTREMELY RARE two year type for Catherine the Great that should see competitive bidding.
