1873. Arrows. PCGS graded Proof 63 PQ. CAC Approved. Only 540 minted. Untoned and well struck. The Philadelphia quarters of 1873 come in three separate variants: the 1873 Closed 3, the 1873 Open 3, and the 1873 With Arrows. All of the stars are boldly struck, all display central definition. The Mint Act of 1873 brought about many changes to U.S. coinage, the most revealing in this issue is the placement of arrowheads at the dates of certain silver denominations (Dimes, Quarters, Half Dollars) to denote the shift to the metric system within U.S. coinage. For two years (1873-1874), the Philadelphia, Carson City and San Francisco Mints produced the with arrows at the date. Then the arrows were removed in 1875 although the metric composition of the issues remained the same. While much of the public at the time never associated these arrows with the metric system, this With Arrows type is very important to type collectors in today's numismatics circles. Pop 34; 50 finer, 36 in 64, 11 in 65, 3 in 66 (PCGS # 5574) . Estimated Value $1,000 - 1,100. Categories: Quarters
