AMÉRIQUE / CINQ CENTSLe nickel Buffalo, parfois connu sous le nom de nickel Indian Head, était une pièce américaine de cinq cents en nickel frappée de 1913 à 1938. Elle a été conçue par le sculpteur James Earle Fraser. Dans le cadre d'une campagne visant à embellir la monnaie, cinq dénominations des pièces de monnaie américaines avaient reçu de nouveaux modèles entre 1907 et 1909. En 1911, les responsables de l'administration Taft décidèrent de remplacer le modèle Liberty Head de Charles E. Barber par le nickel et chargeèrent Fraser de faire le travail. Ils ont été impressionnés par les dessins de Fraser représentant un Amérindien et un bison américain. Les conceptions furent approuvées en 1912, mais furent retardées de plusieurs mois en raison des objections de la Hobbs Manufacturing Company, qui fabriquait des mécanismes pour détecter les limaces dans les machines fonctionnant au nickel. La société n'a pas été apaisée par les modifications apportées à la pièce par Fraser et, en février 1913, le secrétaire au Trésor, Franklin MacVeagh, a décidé d'émettre les pièces malgré les objections. Malgré les tentatives répétées de la Monnaie pour ajuster le design, les pièces se sont avérées frapper indistinctement, et être sujet à l'usure – les dates s'usaient facilement en circulation. En 1938, après l'expiration de la période minimale de 25 ans pendant laquelle le modèle ne pouvait être remplacé sans l'autorisation du Congrès, le modèle fut remplacé par le nickel Jefferson conçu par Felix Schlag.
