Lovely nickel-gray fields spread light in many directions from the smooth Proof-finish surface. We end the luster description though we could extend the discussion into several paragraphs. Next, a word about strike: this low-mintage piece, struck with controlled precision throughout, stands at the forefront of its peers. (The unusual three-cent denomination lasted in this copper-nickel format from 1865 until 1889, when it was terminated along with the Gold Dollar and Three-dollar Gold piece.) Pop 33; 2 finer .
