1856. NGC graded Proof 65. A colorfully toned Gem with mottled sky-blue and gold iridescence equally distributed over each side. The strike is sharp for a Type 2 silver three cent piece, though some lightness is noted at a few reverse stars. Still, this is indicative of multiple blows of the dies, just some uneven striking pressure. As a whole, this series is poorly struck regardless of date or strike format. From an unlisted, but no doubt small proof mintage for the date, perhaps on the order of several dozen pieces. The PCGS website suggests just 60 or so are known in all grades. A highly important offering in this sale. Pop 5; 2 finer in 66. Estimated Value $12,000 - 13,000. Categories: Three Cent Pieces
