1/2 Dollar    (sold for $1900.0)

1915-S Panama-Pacific Half Dollar. NGC graded MS-66. Well struck and untoned. A worthwhile gem by any standard, the luster is not in the least timid or yielding, comprised as it is of wonderful satin to velvet-like qualities and brilliant throughout. There is no toning on either side. The strike, like the luster, is confident, first-rate, and indeed, as bold as ever seen on virtually any Pan-Pacific Half Dollar in any grade. The Half Dollar commemorating this event was the work of Charles E. Barber, a long-time mint's engraver whose father William Barber preceded him in the job in the 1870s. It features Liberty and a child on the obverse. Liberty holds two sprigs of flowers while behind, the sun sets between the southern and northern outcroppings that are the Golden Gate, entrance to San Francisco Bay. Barber included a wingspread eagle on the reverse. It perches on the union shield rather than the shield superimposed on its breast as was the method until then. In all, 27,314 half dollars were sold from an original authorized mintage of 60,000. The unsold pieces were remelted. Pop 238; 58 finer in 67 (PCGS # 9357) . Estimated Value $2,000 - 2,100.
