EUBOIA. Histiaia (c.250-150 avant JC), Silver Tetrobol.Poids : 1,7-2,6 gDiamètre : 12,2-13 mmTête de la nymphe Histiaia tournée vers la droite, portant une couronne.Rév. IΣTIAIE-ΩN , la nymphe Histiaia assise sur la poupe d'une galère à droite, tenant un stylet, le côté de la poupe orné d'une aile (cf. BMC 34ff.). Histiaia, du nom de sa nymphe patronne, commandait une position stratégique surplombant le passage menant au golfe d'Eubée Nord. Dans l’Iliade, Homère décrit la plaine environnante comme « riche en vignes ». En 480 avant JC, la ville fut envahie par les Perses. Après les guerres médiques, elle devint membre de la Confédération de Délos. En 446, les Euboiens se révoltèrent, s'emparèrent d'un navire athénien et assassinèrent son équipage. Ils furent rapidement réduits par Athènes. Périclès exila la population en Macédoine et la remplaça par des Athéniens. La population exilée revint probablement à la fin de la guerre du Péloponnèse en 404 ; par la suite, ils semblent avoir été largement sous le contrôle de Sparte jusqu'à ce qu'ils rejoignent la Deuxième Confédération athénienne en 376-375. La ville semble être devenue membre (pour la première fois) de la ligue reconstituée des villes eubéiennes en 340, mais son allégeance pendant la majeure partie du IVe siècle semble avoir hésité entre Athènes et la Macédoine. Elle était pro-macédonienne au IIIe siècle, c'est pourquoi elle fut attaquée en 208 et capturée en 199 par une force romaine-Pergamène. La garnison romaine fut supprimée en 194. À en juger par la large diffusion de sa monnaie, Histiaia continua de prospérer. On sait peu de choses sur son histoire ultérieure, mais les découvertes sur le site indiquent qu'il a continué à être habité à l'époque romaine, byzantine et ultérieure.RéférencesHead, Barclay.
