1870. NGC graded Proof 65 Red. A blazing full mint red gem example. About 1,000 or so Proofs made (mint records in those days are sometimes contradictory). A scarcity in this outstanding condition. Pop 22; 14 finer with 12 in 66, 2 in 67. Historic Note: In 1863, the Mint Director submitted for Treasury Secretary Salmon P. Chase's approval samples of two designs for the proposed Two-cent piece, one with a Washington head, the other with shield and arrows in saltire (similar to that adopted), preferring the latter -- probably because it was in lower relief. Secretary Chase concurred, but stipulated that the motto GOD OUR TRUST (which appears on the 1863-dated shield Patterns) be changed to IN GOD WE TRUST. This wording was evidently influenced by the motto of Chase's alma mater, Brown University, IN DEO SPERAMUS, 'In God we hope.' Pollock's proposal was written into the pending Mint Bill, which became law April 22, 1864. Estimated Value $1,750 - 2,000. Categories: Two Cent Pieces
