1866-S. No motto. SEGS graded AU-58. Well struck and nice looking. Only 8,500 struck. Our grade is sharpness of AU55 cleaned. The aftereffects of the cleaning are well within the bounds of "ordinary" and it serves no purpose for us to speak of it further. Devices are well struck by the dies (San Francisco having produced quality work since its inception 12 years before). The motto IN GOD WE TRUST became a required component of America's coinage in 1866 and later. But a few No Motto $10 Eagles were struck off by the San Francisco Mint before the new With Motto die was delivered. These are all scarce today (PCGS # 8644) . Estimated Value $8,000 - 8,500.
