The Kennedy family is an American family that is prominent in American politics, government, public service, and business during the 20th century. The first Kennedys to reside in the United States were Patrick Kennedy and Bridget Murphy, who sailed from Ireland to America in 1849. Their son P. J. went into politics and business. P. J. and his wife Mary Hickey were the parents of businessman and politician Joseph P. Kennedy, Sr. The nine children of Joseph Sr. and Rose Fitzgerald were Joseph Jr., John, Rosemary, Kathleen, Eunice, Patricia, Robert, Jean, and Ted. John served as the 35th President of the United States, while Robert and Ted both became prominent senators. The Kennedys' political involvement has mainly concerned the Democratic Party. Harvard University educations have been common among them, and they have contributed greatly to that university's John F. Kennedy School of Government.

Joseph Sr. originally hoped for his eldest son, Joseph Jr., to become a politician and be elected president. After Joseph Jr. was killed during World War II however, those hopes were transferred to his second son, John, to become president. John Kennedy first served in the U.S. House of Representatives before subsequently being elected to the U.S. Senate where he served as the junior Senator from Massachusetts. He was elected president in 1960. During Kennedy's presidency, he appointed his brother Robert as Attorney General, while Ted was elected to the Senate in November 1962. The family received intense publicity, often emphasizing their relative youth, allure, education, and future in politics. From 1947 to 2011, a Kennedy family member has held an elective office in Washington, D.C. This spans more than a quarter of the nation's existence.

The family has suffered many tragedies, which contributed to the idea of the "Kennedy curse". The Kennedy's eldest daughter, Rosemary, underwent a lobotomy which left her incapacitated; John and Robert were both assassinated in the 1960s; Ted was involved in the Chappaquiddick incident in 1969, which caused the death of his young assistant, Mary Jo Kopechne. Joseph Jr., Kathleen, and John Jr. all died in airplane crashes.

Guinea, officially the Republic of Guinea (French: République de Guinée), is a country in the West coast of Africa. Formerly known as French Guinea (French: Guinée française), the modern country is sometimes referred to as Guinea-Conakry in order to distinguish it from other parts of the wider region of the same name, such as Guinea-Bissau and Equatorial Guinea. Guinea has a population of 10.5 million and an area of 245,860 square kilometres (94,927 sq mi).

Guinea is a republic. The president is directly elected by the people and is head of state and head of government. The unicameral Guinean National Assembly is the legislative body of the country, and its members are also directly elected by the people. The judicial branch is led by the Guinea Supreme Court, the highest and final court of appeal in the country.

Guinea is a predominantly Islamic country, with Muslims representing 85 percent of the population. Guinea's people belong to twenty-four ethnic groups. French, the official language of Guinea, is the main language of communication in schools, in government administration, in the media, but more than twenty-four indigenous languages are also spoken.

Guinea's economy is largely dependent on agriculture and mineral production. It is the world's second largest producer of bauxite, and has rich deposits of diamonds and gold.

Human rights in Guinea remain a controversial issue. In 2011 the United States government claimed that torture by security forces, and abuse of women and children (e.g. female genital mutilation) were ongoing abuses of human rights.

The country is named after the Guinea region. Guinea is a traditional name for the region of Africa that lies along the Gulf of Guinea. It stretches north through the forested tropical regions and ends at the Sahel. The English term Guinea comes directly from the Portuguese word Guiné, which emerged in the mid-15th century to refer to the lands inhabited by the Guineus, a generic term for the black African peoples below the Senegal River, as opposed to the 'tawny' Zenaga Berbers, above it, whom they called Azenegues or Moors.
